A narrow galley kitchen and laundry room once occupied this space in the front of this updated center hall colonial home. Removing the laundry room provided additional storage and eating space for this family of five, and the additional area allowed for the design of this beautiful and functional island, complete with a banquette. The efficient layout and custom cabinetry were designed to the owner’s specific requirements, including designated spaces for small appliances, cabinets that fit her dishes, and a built-in charging station for the growing cadre of electronic devices that fill family homes today. Infused with rich color and abundant light, this room, which is located at the front of the house, serves as both a gracious entry as well as the functional heart of the home.
