Every time I talk about how our residential architecture firm has expertise in aging in place or working with older adults, someone has a story to share. We hear about grandparents, siblings, spouses, children, and parents—how their houses worked for them, until they didn't. People whose loved ones anticipated aging in place but didn't plan for it. There's a distinct difference between those two approaches.

That's why I'm so grateful to Veranda and Grace Haynes Wall for making space for this important conversation, and for understanding that being thoughtful about futureproofing your home and making it aesthetically pleasing are not mutually exclusive.

The best kitchens are designed for how a family actually lives—not just today, but for every chapter ahead. When the owners of this Mountain Brook cottage came to us, their goal was clear: a space where their love of entertaining and the joy of being grandparents could happen in the same room.

By combining the existing kitchen with an underused sunroom and reorganizing the flow of the home, the new kitchen and laundry room became the true heart of this house. The island invites grandchildren to pull up a stool and help roll out dough, while the cabinetry and appliances were selected with ease of use and safety in mind, for grandparents and grandkids alike. A new banquette creates a natural spot for little ones to settle in and color while dinner comes together nearby.

This is what Aging in Place design looks like when it's done well: a home that supports every generation beautifully, without asking anyone to compromise.

People assume we design for older adults.

And we do. But we also design for preschoolers and teenagers.

Good design isn't exclusively for one generation. A home that works for a toddler learning to walk—wide circulation, no thresholds, forgiving surfaces, everything at a human scale—is the same home that works for the grandparent visiting for a week, or the homeowner who has to rehab an injury.

The idea is simple: we design homes for the people who live in them today and who will live in them tomorrow.

This photograph is a newly constructed cottage we completed in Homewood, Alabama. The clients were thinking about their family now. We were thinking about their family for the next thirty years.

Both families belong in the same design.

Sometimes the answer isn’t moving. It’s looking at your home differently.

We’ve learned that thoughtful aging-in-place planning usually starts with the spaces that already feel frustrating or underused. A cramped bathroom, poor lighting, narrow doorways, or a room that rarely gets used can become an opportunity to make daily life easier and safer over time.

The goal is never to make a home feel institutional. It’s to help it continue supporting the people who live there comfortably and confidently for years to come.

What Does Expertise Mean to Us?

It means providing clients with information that helps them make informed decisions about their home investments. That means we invest in education by attending conferences that broaden and deepen our knowledge of the work we do.

We also host vendor representatives at continuing education sessions here in our Birmingham offices, so our team—and other small design firms in the area—can learn together. The building industry doesn't happen in a vacuum. The people who develop materials, finishes, and systems are essential partners in bringing your home to life.

We’ve learned that the most valuable part of a Thrive at Home assessment is often the shift in perspective it creates.

Many homes have spaces that are underutilized, difficult to navigate, or no longer support daily routines as well as they could. Through thoughtful planning and detailed evaluation, clients begin to see new possibilities in the home they already love.

That clarity helps them make informed decisions that support comfort, function, and long-term living at home.

Good residential architecture isn’t only about the number of bedrooms, or about proportion or alignment or natural light, it’s about marrying all of those things with understanding how you want to live, now and in the years to come. Our job is to design spaces to make that possible.

This is why we like to start with questions.

In March, Taylor attended a specialized conference in Phoenix to learn from occupational therapists, gerontologists, senior living specialists, architects, and interior designers about how spaces support people as they age. The insights from this work—about how beautifully designed homes can expand the possibilities available to us in the second half of our lives—inform everything we do here at TPD.

And designing for aging? That’s just invisible. It doesn't announce itself. It simply allows your home to work for you, not against you, as all the stages of your life unfold.
