Situated on an irregular, narrow lot in an older Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood, this home was designed as a right-sized pied-à-terre for homeowners ready to downsize without compromising on character or comfort. TPD navigated a tight site and strict zoning without a variance by shaping the home’s massing to respect its Tudor Revival neighbors.

A series of connected volumes organized around an interior courtyard brings natural light deep into the plan, giving each space a strong visual connection to the landscaped property.

And because we’ve learned the best homes plan ahead, accessibility was built in early: minimal steps at entry, two main-level suites, curbless showers, wider doors, and blocking for future grab bars—so the home supports how they want to live now and later.

A “tidy” floor plan is often the result of solving very untidy problems.

Less-than-ideal lot sizes, setbacks, boundaries, and local regulations require thoughtful planning from the start. We look closely at those constraints early so the home can make the most of every inch. The result is a floor plan that feels clear, detailed, and easy to live in.

We also stay involved through construction, working with the contractor to answer questions and help ensure the design is carried through as intended.

We are thrilled to have this cottage kitchen in Mountain Brook featured in the Spring 2026 issue of ‘The Cottage Journal.’

When we first met with the homeowners, we understood their goal: to create a kitchen where they could marry their love for family entertaining with the joy of being grandparents. This kitchen does just that.

Canyon Boyd, joining us as a Project Manager, is a Birmingham native who brings a hands-on approach to each phase of our projects, working closely with homeowners, contractors, and the design team so that each home we deliver reflects our commitment to stewardship, thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and constructability.

A 2020 graduate of Auburn University’s Bachelor of Architecture program, Canyon has a thorough, detail-oriented approach to project delivery that keeps complex residential projects on track from design through construction administration.
