There’s nothing better than natural light. ☀️ For this modern Homewood cottage, it was a must.

Skylights bring sunshine into the heart of the home. A pretty lovely place to start the day.

With so many of us revisiting the words and wisdom of the late, great Dolly Parton lately, this quote stopped us in our tracks:

“Well, honey, nobody knows what’s around the corner, but I know one thing. If you keep yourself out of the game for fear of losing, there is no way on this Earth you’re gonna win.”

We can’t know what the future holds. So when we talk about Aging in Place, we’re actually talking about a host of possibilities. Nobody knows exactly what’s around the corner, and there’s no such thing as being perfectly prepared.

But we can make choices today that give us more options tomorrow.

We can create homes that are easier to navigate. We can think ahead about comfort, safety, accessibility, and independence. We can make changes before they become urgent.

Because planning for the unknown isn’t about fear.

It’s about keeping yourself in the game, and giving yourself the best possible chance to keep living life on your terms.

A safer bathroom can still feel like your bathroom. Grab bars have come a long way, with options designed to coordinate with the rest of your fixtures instead of feeling like an afterthought.

Taylor recently chatted with Sarah Lyon for The Spruce about thoughtful bathroom features that can make a home safer and easier to use for years to come. @‌sarahlyon9 @TheSpruceOfficial

Taylor is featured in The Spruce’s “7 Features to Consider for a Safer, More Age-Friendly Bathroom, According to Accessibility Experts” by Sarah Lyon! @SarahLyon9 @TheSpruceOfficial

Bathrooms are one of the most important spaces to consider when planning to age in place. They’re also a perfect example of why accessibility and beautiful design don’t have to be at odds.

Taylor spoke with The Spruce about some of the thoughtful details we incorporate into bathrooms designed for long-term use. The goal isn’t to create a bathroom that looks like it was designed for aging. It’s to make smart choices now that allow the space to continue working beautifully as your needs change.

Thank you to Sarah Lyon for including Taylor’s perspective and to The Spruce for continuing the conversation around thoughtful, age-friendly design.

In case you’re new around here, let’s go back to the basics.

What is aging in place? Why do we think it’s so important to talk about it? Is it ever too soon to think about accessible design?

Here at TPD, we believe that thinking about what comes next just makes sense. And given what we know about housing stock, and what we know about the cost of construction, it makes more sense than ever to think about how you can live longer in your own home or how your home might be a fit for someone else who is thinking about living independently during their golden years.

Don’t be afraid of color. Especially when there’s a reason behind it.

In this Birmingham home, each room was inspired by a favorite piece from the owner’s impressive collection. We pulled from the colors, patterns, and details they already loved and let those pieces guide the interiors.

That’s a big part of our interior design work: creating rooms that feel personal to the people who live there, not like they came straight from a showroom.

And sometimes, that means having a little more fun with color.

When clients are considering a major renovation to an older home, one question often comes up: How long can this home continue to serve me and my family?

As architects, we can help with the physical side of that question by creating ease, lowering maintenance, and designing spaces that can adapt as needs change.

More options are beginning to emerge for people who want to remain in their current homes while accessing additional services as they need them.

Our Thrive at Home consultation helps homeowners explore how their home can support changing needs. “Comment THRIVE” to learn more about our Thrive at Home consultation.

Sharing a detail from our Stone House Renovation in Mountain Brook, Alabama.

When a home has been part of the same family for generations, every design decision deserves a little extra consideration. Here, we preserved the home’s original stone exterior walls, allowing a piece of its history to remain visible within the newly reconfigured spaces.

It’s a reminder that renovating an older home doesn’t have to mean erasing what came before. Sometimes, the best details are the ones that help tell its story.

As Falls Prevention Awareness Month comes to an end, I wanted to share a few thoughts on a topic that comes up often in our work.

For clients thinking about how their homes can serve them longer, fall prevention is an important part of that conversation. And it often goes beyond the things you might first think of.

Good design can help reduce fall risks without making a home feel clinical.

For National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, we’re taking a closer look at the Aging in Place features built into this bathroom, including an undermount tub, strategically placed grab bars, accessible storage, and a seated vanity.

These details are intentionally integrated into the design so the space feels beautiful and comfortable now, while supporting changing needs over time.

Thoughtful planning today can make a meaningful difference in how safely and confidently you live at home in the years ahead.
