When the second-floor owner’s suite and basement laundry room in this 1938 home no longer served this couple, we designed a main-level suite that not only provided a more accessible location but also considered a design that’s tailored for the needs of a Parkinson’s patient.

Accessible fixtures don’t have to compromise style. One way to upgrade the look of accessible design is with the finishes. Stained white oak cabinetry, polished nickel fittings, and quartzite counters add warmth to the space, and simple open shelving allows for easy access to bath towels and linens.

Situated on an irregular, narrow lot in an older Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood, this home was designed as a right-sized pied-à-terre for homeowners ready to downsize without compromising on character or comfort. TPD navigated a tight site and strict zoning without a variance by shaping the home’s massing to respect its Tudor Revival neighbors.

A series of connected volumes organized around an interior courtyard brings natural light deep into the plan, giving each space a strong visual connection to the landscaped property.

And because we’ve learned the best homes plan ahead, accessibility was built in early: minimal steps at entry, two main-level suites, curbless showers, wider doors, and blocking for future grab bars—so the home supports how they want to live now and later.

A “tidy” floor plan is often the result of solving very untidy problems.

Less-than-ideal lot sizes, setbacks, boundaries, and local regulations require thoughtful planning from the start. We look closely at those constraints early so the home can make the most of every inch. The result is a floor plan that feels clear, detailed, and easy to live in.

We also stay involved through construction, working with the contractor to answer questions and help ensure the design is carried through as intended.
