The road to a renovation is rarely straightforward, and this new, modern home in the heart of Homewood is no exception. During demolition, uncovering some unexpected conditions meant a pivot for a proposed renovation of this family home. Faced with the choice of whether to pursue a difficult renovation or start fresh, the owners chose to capture what they had loved about their cottage and translate it into a new home with expansive natural light that supported their love of cooking, embraced their beautiful backyard, and provided space for them to entertain friends and family.
The deep narrow lot drove the decision to focus the public space in the back of the home so that gatherings might spill into the backyard and the trees could filter the light coming through the wide bays of dining room and kitchen windows and skylights. A loft space, acting as the connection between the more traditional cottage scale at the front of the house, provides a cozy reading nook for the couple’s daughter, who accesses the space via a ladder in her bedroom. And while the public rooms are open to each other with a monochromatic palette, the natural light is captured from several sources, creating movement and dynamism in the spaces.
