Aging in Place February 27, 2026

When should I Call an Architect? In last week’s post, I highlighted three questions that get at the heart of new construction and renovation projects: why you are thinking about a project, what you love about the way you or your family lives in a home, and how you want to live in twenty years. Our goal is designing homes for our clients that reflect their very personal answers to those questions.

When people first reach out, they often say: “I don’t have all the answers yet,” or “we are wondering whether we could. . .” That’s exactly the right time to call. And please know that you don’t need the answers worked out before reaching out to us. Helping you figure out those answers is at the heart of what we do.

And if I’m Not Ready for a Full Renovation or New Construction Project?

Sometimes our initial conversations reveal that what you need is focused, expert guidance on making your current home work for you for the long term, particularly aging in place—that’s our Thrive at Home consultation. We help you understand what needs to happen for you to stay in your home as long as you want to. Sometimes you’re exploring a major renovation or new construction and need clarity on scope, feasibility, and investment before committing to design—that’s our Project Definition service.

Both services start with understanding what you actually need and what is feasible for the home or property, not just what you think you want. Sometimes the answer is “this project doesn’t make sense right now” or “here’s a smaller intervention that solves the real problem,” or even, “we need to think about moving.” That clarity, the ability to make informed decisions, is really valuable too.

When Full Architectural Services Make Sense

When a project does make sense—and when it’s substantial enough to warrant full architectural services—we work with homeowners on whole-house renovations, significant additions, and new construction. These are projects that change how you live: multiple rooms, changes to footprint, new homes designed around your family’s actual life.

The best time to reach out? Get in touch when you are considering a project but don’t have the answers. That’s when strategic thinking matters most.
