Expanding What Senior Living Looks Like

Taylor Plosser Davis Architecture + Design, in association with KPS Group, is very excited to share this new project – Cedar Ridge at Kirkwood by the River.

“Kirkwood, ideally located on 120 acres of forested land along the Cahaba River, began as a nonprofit created by Independent Presbyterian Church Birmingham, Alabama to offer continuing care retirement to seniors in the Birmingham area. The new independent living neighborhood, Cedar Ridge at Kirkwood, will feature charming, cottage-style homes perfectly situated in the heart of our 120-acre campus. This natural, wooded, retreat-like setting along the Cahaba River will offer the finest in “modern mountain living,” with the serenity that accompanies having a plan for any future healthcare needs. Cedar Ridge at Kirkwood is the start of a campus-wide expansion and improvement plan to better meet our community’s needs.” Kirkwood by the River, website

Accessibility Is Important for Every Home

We’re seeing a lot of overlap when thinking about “shelter in place” and when designing for Aging in Place.

We’ve always talked with clients about ACCESSIBILITY and getting in and out of their homes, whether that’s through the front door or from the car in the garage. Those design considerations for Aging In Place clients are really more universal, and we are thinking about these principles for all of our clients. We all want our homes to be accommodating and we can start to think about that more expansively:

Handprints

Groovy. Painted on the floor of a midcentury home’s utility/rec room.  I love thinking about how the parents of these teenagers came around to handing their kids a couple of cans of paint and a paintbrush and let them loose.  Maybe the slab painting wasn’t sanctioned.  Regardless, the lingering effect of the graffiti on the floor for me was that someone had given the kids the opportunity to shape their space.  The room was clearly their own:  red and blue paint on the block walls, not quite adult handprints on the walls and floor, and “cool” and groovy” painted prominently on the floor.

This Is How It Starts . . .

One of the downsides of my early morning boot camp is that the music will be on repeat in my head the rest of the day. Sometimes that is good. Sometimes, it is not. The other day, the Colbie Caillat song, “This Is How it Starts” got stuck.

Notebook

For most architects I know, a sketchbook is a constant companion: it’s where we keep project meeting notes, write down ideas and inspiration, and sketch solutions to design problems. This Notebook is similar: you’ll find thoughts on residential architecture, insight and advice for working with an architect, as well as some glimpses of what’s currently on the drawing board here at Taylor Plosser Davis, AIA.
